Williamston has an unusual origin for an Upstate town. A mineral spring discovered on West Allen Williams’s land in the 1840s drew visitors looking for its supposed health benefits, a resort grew up around it, and by the 1850s the settlement had a charter and a name. It was known for a time as the Saratoga of the South.

Mineral Spring Park on West Main Street is still the center of town, with a playground, covered picnic shelters and a calendar of community events — the Springwater Festival in late August, Boo in the Park at Halloween and the Christmas Park display through December.

Schools run through Anderson School District One, with Palmetto High serving the town.

Williamston sits on SC-20 and US-29 between Anderson and Greenville, which is the practical draw: two cities within a half-hour in opposite directions, I-85 close by, and Lake Hartwell west for boating and fishing.
