Downtown covers the residential streets threaded through the middle of Greenville — North Main Street, Perry Avenue, Arlington Avenue, Anderson Street, Gower Street, Sterling Street, Casey Street, Maloy Street, Moore Street, David Street and North Markley Street among them. This is the part of the city where the house and the restaurants share a sidewalk.

The building stock is genuinely mixed, which is what makes it interesting. A 1940s bungalow with a basement can sit a block from a recent infill build on a slab; ranch, Craftsman and transitional all appear, and lots are half an acre or less with public water and sewer throughout. Many streets have sidewalks, and the newer construction tends to go vertical on small lots.

What you buy is proximity: Falls Park on the Reedy, the Liberty Bridge, Main Street, Fluor Field and the Swamp Rabbit Trail are all walkable from most of these addresses. A. J. Whittenberg Elementary and Greenville High School serve much of the area, both Greenville County Schools.

It suits buyers who will actually use the walkability — people who want to leave the car parked on a Saturday. If the appeal is downtown without a yard at all, the condo market covers the same ground, and Markley Place sits right on North Markley Street.
